Super middleweight contender Jerson Ravelo (19-3 12KOs) returned to his winning ways in front of his hometown crowd on Wednesday night at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ by scoring a one-sided unanimous decision victory over dangerous veteran Dhafir Smith (20-19-6 4KOs). Ravelo, who was stopped recently on Showtime by Andre Ward, looked confident the later rounds, keeping Smith off balance with combinations and movement behind stiff double jabs to win easily on all scorecards 79-73 x 3. The entertaining main event highlighted a successful night of boxing in the inaugural promotional debut of former referee Harvey Dock of HD Promotions. Undefeated welterweight prospect Mike Torres (12-0 8KOs) continued his winning ways with an impressive third round TKO over hard punching Kpakpo Alloytey in the co-feature of the evening.

It was a crossroads fight for Ravelo. Would he be able to come back from the loss to Andre Ward? He answered the question with flying colors in taking the unanimous decision victory over Dhafir Smith

Jerson Ravelo 167 controlled the fight in the early going with short shots on the inside while stepping in and out of the pocket to avoid any shots in return. Dhafir Smith 167, known for his slow and cautious starts, began to find his range with big counter overhand rights in rounds three and four as both traded.

Like a superb tactician, Ravelo began to switch his attack with potshots and movement, which prevented Smith from sitting down on his punches. Dhafir became more tentative

As the rounds progressed, which allowed Ravelo to unload with big combinations more frequently

By the eighth and final round Ravelo was in complete control and continued his lunges with safe one and two punch combinations that kept Dhafir from landing anything that could hurt him.

The bout went to the scorecards, with all three judges scoring the bout 79-73 in favor of. Jerson Ravelo.

“This was confidence builder for me coming from the Andre Ward bout,” said Ravelo. “I landed some really hard shots on him. I knew I hurt him a couple of times, but I couldn’t take the chance of walking into anything.

Jerson seemed very confident as he talked about his future “I plan on one more fight like this and then take on a top 15 guy,” said Jerson. “ I had several injuries. People just see the fights and don’t realize what the fighter is really going through. I broke my hand five times. Two more fights and I am ready for anybody. Jeff Lacey, he could be my next fight if he wanted to.”

Torres topples Alloytey

Undefeated Yonkers, New York welterweight Mike Torres (12-0, 7KOs) stepped up in class convincingly, dropping African, knockout artist, Kpapko Alloytey (16-6, 14KOs) four times en-route to a 3rd round technical knockout.

Torres electrified the crowd early with a straight right that put Alloytey on the canvas.

Alloytey rose to his feet, but a perfect placed short right on the chin forced a delayed second knockdown. It looked like the end was near as Torres unloaded while Alloytey tried to clinch. Torres in frustration threw Alloytey to the canvas to get out of the clinch, allowing him time to recover. Referee Eddie Cotton looked closely as Torres again reigned down punches on Alloytey, who covered up in the corner, but the bell sounded to save the man from Ghana.

Torres continued to break down the man from Ghana. Alloytey would shuffle his feet every time he was caught with a combination to show he wasn’t hurt, but just couldn’t mount any sort of attack.

Torres finally put Alloytey to the canvas with a left hook. Alloytey was dazed and went on the retreat. Torres chased him and then finished the job with a seven-punch combination that put Alloytey to the canvas as Referee Eddie Cotton stepped in to call the bout off. The time of the stoppage was 2:15 of round three.

This was a big step up for me because this guy had twenty-one fights with sixteen knockouts,” said Torres. “I knew he had power, so when I dropped him, I was still cautious, but in the third round I was able to land more uppercuts and and right hands which did the job.”

Bogar stops Guaman in 57 seconds

Newark, New Jersey junior welterweight Rashad Bogar barely needed to break a sweat in his pro debut, scoring a first round stoppage of formerly undefeated Ecuadorian, Juan Guaman (1-1, 1KO).

Bogar 140.5 staggered Guaman right from the opening bell with a right hand up top behind a left jab. Guaman 134 tried to fight back, but it was to no avail as another two-punch combination put him on the seat of his pants. Guaman rose to his feet, but after another heavy Bogar two-punch combination, his corner had seen enough and stepped up to the ring apron and threw in the towel at 57 seconds of the opening round.

Brito impressive in debut

Omar Brito of Dover, New Jersey showed his heavy hands early in the second round by dropping Patterson, New Jersey’s Manuel Jiminez twice en-route to a second round tko in the battle of debuting junior welterweights.

Jimenez 138.5 appeared to have the tighter combinations and won many of the exchanges. The bout changed in round two as Brito 139 found his punching distance and sent Jimenez to the canvas with a chopping right hand. Brito knew his opponent was in trouble, but got a little too excited and charged across the ring and swung. Many of his punches were smothered as Jimenez clinched. Brito regained his composure and unloaded another big right hand with proper distance, which dropped Jimenez to the canvas again. Jimenez struggled to his feet, but referee Stanford Ricks had seen enough and called a halt to the bout at 1:15 of the second round.

Lennox crushes Cuffee

Newark, New Jersey’s own debuting heavyweight John Lennox made the local fans happy by dropping Brooklyn New York’s Ricardo Cuffee (0-3) twice en-route to a one sided second round tko.

Lennox 199 had Cuffee timed right from the opening bell landing an assortment of combinations and uppercuts. Late in the opening stanza, a left to the body followed by a left hook to the head sent Cuffee 207 to his knees. He rose to his feet, but the bell sounded before any more damage could be inflicted.

The heavy handed Lennox continued the onslaught throughout round two. Late in the round, a right uppercut staggered Cuffee. Lennox jumped on the Brooklyn native and put him on the canvas for the second time in the fight with a two-punch combination. Cuffee clinched and survived the round.

Lennox continued the pummeling in round three. Cuffee could only retreat and cover from the onslaught of punches. Finally, after five unanswered shots, Cuffee’s corner had seen enough and stepped up to the ring apron to call the fight off at 1:06 of round three.

Sanchez blasts out Brown in two

Patterson, New Jersey’s Alvin Sanchez set the tone in the for the evening, scoring a beautiful second round knockout of Robert Brown of Blackville, South Carolina in a battle of debuting heavyweights.

Brown 201 came out right from the opening bell, trading and winning several of the opening volleys with nice combinations. Sanchez 201 calmed down as the opening round went on and timed the flurries with some heavy upper cuts and left hooks that slowed wide punches of Brown.

Sanchez took control in round two of the scheduled four rounder with a hard left uppercut on the chin, which backed up Brown. He recovered quickly and landed an overhand right of his own. Sanchez would not be denied though and uncorked two perfectly timed left hooks the planted Brown face first to the canvas. Surprisingly at the count of five, Brown rose to his feet, but was in no shape to continue and Referee Sanford Ricks immediately waved the bout off at 2:28 of the second round.

An exciting night of professional boxing is set for tonight at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey as Harvey Dock’s HD Promotions is prepared to put on an evenly matched six bout club card. The main event will feature Newark’s own Jerson Ravelo (18-3, 12KO’s), who will swap punches with dangerous Philadelphian Dhafir “No Fear” Smith (20-18-6, 4KOs) in an eight round super middleweight clash. The co-feature of the evening also has that local favor as Yonkers, New York’s undefeated welterweight, Michael Torres (11-0, 6KOs), who will tangle with hard-hitting Kpakpo Allotey (16-5, 14KOs) of Ghana over six rounds of action.

Ravelo looks to bounce back from his recent loss to Andre Ward, but will have a tough time of it as he faces the man called “No Fear”. Throw out the records as Smith (20-18-6, 4KOs) has faced a virtual who’s who of prospects, such as Andre Ward, Mike Paschall and Curtis Stevens. In his last bout, he lost a controversial split decision to Kingsley Ikeke (24-3, 12KOs) and should provide quite a test for Jerson Ravelo.

Torres 11-0, 6KOs of Yonkers, NY looks to make a big splash on the welterweight scene in 2009, but he must first get by the dangerous Kpapko Allotey, who has won fourteen of his sixteen victories by way of knockout.

The under-card is filled with fighters making their first steps into the squared circle as professionals.

Newark, New Jersey’s Rashad Bogar (Pro debut) tangles with Juan Guaman (1-0) of Long Island, New York in a four round welterweight scrap.
